Mahatma Gandhi Biography

 


Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian independence activist who was the leader of India's non-violent resistance movement against British rule. He was born in Porbandar, India and was educated in law in London, England. Upon returning to India, Gandhi worked as a lawyer, but later devoted himself to political activism and fighting for India's independence from Britain. He utilized non-violent civil disobedience as a means of protest and is best known for his role in India's independence movement, as well as his philosophy of nonviolent resistance, which he called satyagraha. Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by a fanatic Hindu nationalist. He is revered in India as the "Father of the Nation" and is considered one of the most influential figures in modern world history.
